WHAT ARE THE APPLICATION STEPS?

Police sworn and civilian positions vary in the process, but a background investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation, and interviews are required. Sworn positions additionally require written and physical testing.

WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL DEMANDS FOR A POLICE OFFICER?
- Tasks involve regular and sustained performance of moderately to heavy physically demanding work, typically involving, but not limited to, some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of moderate to heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds)
- Tasks involve the ability to perform semi-skilled, coordinated movements such as those required to operate firearms and motor vehicles
- Tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, as well as visual perception and discrimination
- Tasks risk the possibility of exposure to violence that may or may not involve weapons and physical altercations
- Tasks risk the possibility of exposure to adverse, environmental conditions such as, but not limited to, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, snow, ice, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery vibrations, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substance
WHAT IS REQUIRED TO BE ELIGIBLE TO BECOME A POLICE OFFICER?
- U. S. Citizen
- Uncorrected vision with glasses not worse than 20/100 in either eye, OR corrective lenses or contacts may be worn.
- Be 21 years of age at the date of appointment.
- High school graduate or possess a valid G.E.D. certificate recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Possess or can acquire a valid Virginia Operator’s License at time of appointment.
- Illegal drug use will be reviewed with respect to recent use, type of drug, and frequency of use.
- Never been involved in, committed, or convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor. Involvement in past criminal activity will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
- Be of good character and reputation.
- Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Stable work record.
